When to use EAN-8

EAN-8 is meant for packs so small that an EAN-13 would take up more than a quarter of the printable area. Because the number space is tiny, EAN-8 numbers are allocated individually by GS1 on request. For internal labels, Code 128 is far more flexible.

FAQ

Do EAN-8 numbers also come from GS1?
Yes. For retail use they are requested separately from GS1.
